Ecosia is a search engine that gives back to nature – 80% of profits go to planting trees in threatened biodiversity hotspots. They decided to go one step further and create a campaign store that spreads the message and create a conversation about their values. In this blog, we caught up with Trudie to learn how they use social media and their T-shirt collection that encourages their audience and plant more trees.
Great to have the chance to talk with you, can we just take a moment to say how incredible combining saving the planet with a search engine is! We want to hear all about how that fits in with the campaign, but first, can you tell us a little more about what you guys do, a bit about how this is relevant in the world today and what drives you?
Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees. As a social business, we use 80% of our profits to fund reforestation projects in the world’s most threatened biodiversity hotspots. Our mission is building a greener world, combat desertification and empower local communities on a global scale.
That’s amazing that you are doing so much for the threatened parts of the world. What made you feel like you had to do more and why did you decide to do a store?
Ecosia is one of the world’s fastest-growing environmental movements. We felt users needed a way to show more support.
Our users are passionate about spreading the word and wearing an Ecosia t-shirt is a great way to do that.
The store is already generating additional revenue for tree-planting. In fact, all of our profits from the merchandise directly fund reforestation projects. Everyone who buys a t-shirt will, therefore, plant 20 trees.
What is your plan for marketing, any specific strategies or tactics you’re trying?
We are already promoting our store on our website, blog, and newsletter of course, but we also work closely with our ambassadors and influences to create a viral social media campaign. We are currently aiming to give visibility to our tree-planting partners as much as possible!
It sounds like your making clear, deep tracks! With the idea of a search engine leading to a clothing store, what’s the ambition with your store and where do you hope it goes?
We are already reaching people who don’t yet use Ecosia. We aim to keep that on the increase, but are passionate about environmentalism and love the design of our products. With the current rise in sales, it won’t be too long till we’re able to make bold claims such as “Profits from this t-shirt planted an entire forest in Tanzania!”
How did you approach this project in terms of your values and capturing the idea of planting more trees? What do you want to get out of it and what are you looking to achieve in the long run?
Our main objective is to give something of value back to our dedicated users, and let them know that they can do more to support us. Generating money to plant more trees is our most important aim.
Which product are you most excited about and why?
We know our standard Ecosia t-shirts will be a hit with our users, but we’re also excited to see if we can engage a wider demographic with our “Trees Suck (CO2 out of the air)” and “Trees Empower Women” designs. Both these designs have a dedicated message to share.
Its great to see that a simple idea to start a brand is leading to saving the planet making a clear visible difference. Continue the good work and keep those awesome designs coming!
