8 ways to make your online store look amazing
You’ve put tonnes of effort into driving traffic to your Teemill store through ads and social media and now converting all of that traffic into sales comes down to great merchandising.

If you’ve put tonnes of effort into driving traffic to your Teemill store, you’re going to want to convert all of that traffic into sales. Doing this is pretty simple - it just comes down to great merchandising.

Merchandising is just a fancy e-commerce way of saying, arranging your store so that all your very best stuff is presented in a way that really WOWs your customers. To give you a helping hand in getting started with your merchandising, we asked the pros here at Teemill what every store owner should do to turn traffic into crazy levels of sales, and put everything they said right here in this blog.

Think about your local high street. If you head into a shop that’s all dark, dingy and badly organised, you’re probably going to do a big U turn. On the other hand, if it looks clean and bright, with a load of really amazing products on display, you’ll probably stick around for a closer look. Online merchandising is no different.

1. Make your homepage look amazing.

Visitors ended up on your site because they are interested and they’re open to buying something. Everything you do now is about keeping that feeling going.

You want your store to look credible, and your customers want to know that it’s a trustworthy place to buy. Your homepage is the first thing customers will see when they click on your site, so it has to be a reflection of your best work. Incredible photography, great products and compelling writing will help your customers decide your store is legitimate and want to browse further.

2. Keep your store design really simple.

Modern art galleries have light, bright walls to make the art really pop and the same principle applies to your store. A pale background will really make your products stand out and if you want to have a pop of colour, the best place is your buy now button.

3. It's not all about the product.

To make sure your store passes the legitimacy test with flying colours, make your store not just about the product. Tell people about your brand, how it started, and if you’re a charity or organisation, tell people about the work you’re doing and how your t-shirts support it. A great place to do this is in your blogs. Plus, you can share the Teemill Journey page on your store too so that your customers can see exactly how your products are made.

4. Have easy and effective store navigation.

Once you’ve wowed with your homepage, you want to make the navigation of your site as easy as possible for your customers. It’s unlikely that people have come to your store with something specific in mind - and if they have, that’s why you have the search bar. Most people are just having a bit of a mooch.

Make navigation as easy as possible with simple, clearly defined product categories.

Your menu doesn't need to link straight to collections. Create Pages within Website via the main menu to build themed sub-pages that then link out to different collections and products from there. For example, if your menu links out to Women's, create a landing page that features different collections like Bestsellers, Tops and Jumpers. Then from this landing page, you can link out to specific collections that list relevant products.

Although it's easy to automatically think you need lots of drop downs in your menu, switching these for specific landing pages makes it much easier for your customers to navigate, especially when they're browsing on mobiles and tablets. Plus, it gives you an excuse to use amazing photography and create some beautiful themed pages on your store.

5. Mix it up.

Populate each of your collections with a range of products. This makes it easy for people to find something they want to buy, even if they don’t yet know what it is they’re looking for yet.

When you’re building collections, remember people like to browse just like they do when scrolling through social media, so avoid repetition. People want to see variety so mix up your products in your collections.

When your customer finds a product they like, they’ll click on it for a closer look. This takes them to your product page which is where you need to put the most work into convincing your customer to buy.

6. Build Bundles to bump up your basket value.

The easiest way to increase the average order value you on your store is with bundles. Bundle Builder allows you to pick and choose different products from across your store, and package them together into one neat set.

As well as pushing up your basket value, bundles are a great marketing tool. You can offer your customers a little discount for buying multiple products as well as creating themed bundles, building an outfit, or selling limited edition bundles to build up some excitement around a product launch.

7. Don't underestimate the importance of a product description.

Every decision your customer has made up to this point has been in their hearts. What you’re up against now is that little voice in their head that says “do I really need to buy this?”

This is where your product description comes in.

Your product description is that last little bit of encouragement and reassurance that lets your customer know they’re about to make a great purchase - it’s how you convince them to hit that checkout button.

Zero in on what your customers actually want, and remind them of the reason they showed an interest in your store in the first place.

8. The power of "NEW".

The key to great merchandising is keeping on top of it. Much like a shop window, it just needs a refresh every now and then. Add a new product, photography or update your homepage every 2 or 3 weeks to freshen it up and keep it interesting, not only for new customers, but returning ones.

Never underestimate the power of the word ‘NEW’. It's the most clicked-on word in e-commerce. Create a category to feature all your newest products, and link to it from your homepage.

Keep your collections up to date and in tune with what’s happening in the lives of your customers. You want to be giving people what they need precisely when they need it. In summer it’s a cool, light t-shirt, where as in winter it's a warm and cosy hoody and in the run up to Christmas it’s gift ideas.

One final piece of advice, check out how your store looks on multiple devices. What looks awesome on your desktop might look slightly different on a mobile phone, so make sure it looks really incredible however your customer is browsing.

So there's our top tips for turning traffic into sales with amazing store design. Start with amazing designs, thumb stopping photography and compelling product descriptions, and you've got the foundation of an incredible store.
