Before we get into that, it's worth asking, what is marketing? Our first vid is not about a campaign or commercial, although it features one. It's Steve Jobs talking about how marketing transcends the product, or frames it in the company's values.<\/p><p><\/p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AKNb40SqkKo\/?modestbranding=1&amp;rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;vq=highres\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><p><\/p><blockquote><p>What does your brand stand for? What is your mission? Why should people believe in your brand and buy into it?<\/p><\/blockquote><p>If you can think about and answer these questions, it could be as simple as posting other content that speaks the same language, or says the same message. Arguably, the real work is in crafting the idea and the meaning behind what you're doing with your brand. After all, this Apple commercial is just a montage of historical footage.<br><\/p><p><\/p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wyHI3IrJOR8\/?modestbranding=1&amp;rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;vq=highres\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><h3><strong>Nike Just Do It<br><\/strong><\/h3><p>When we watch Nike ads or look at Nike posters, it's striking how the campaigns barely feature the product - sometimes they don't at all. Because the best marketing is not about selling the product, it's about building the brand, and creating feelings. This ad campaign is classic Nike, designed to make your hair stand on end and tingle. That's why when you see the tick, you feel like a winner. Nike feels like... Victory. This reveals an important principle the best marketing people know. It's that while you can reason with people who might agree, feelings are far more likely to lead to action.<\/p><p>So your content doesn't even need product in it, as long as it makes people feel inspired by your brand.<\/p><p><\/p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jsP0W7-tEOc\/?modestbranding=1&amp;rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;vq=highres\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><h3><strong>This Girl Can<br><\/strong><\/h3><p>Big agencies are realising, perhaps too late, that people want to see real people. That's where you come in. As an independent brand you are exactly the kind of people these agencies are going out to scout for. Notice how their content is becoming more like your feed. When the big agencies are trying to recreate stuff that you'd post, it just means you can beat them - because you can post whatever you want, whenever you want.<\/p><p>This should encourage you that having a big 4K camera setup and a film crew just gets in the way. All you need is great content - real content - and a positive message to publish online.<\/p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ikkg4NobV_w\/?modestbranding=1&amp;rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;vq=highres\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><h3><strong>Whassssuuuuuup<br><\/strong><\/h3><p>An oldie but a goodie. The ad ticks all the boxes of target audience, and setting the scene of lads on sofas is a clever way to relate to the watcher - inevitably sitting on sofa, watching TV. No crazy airbrushes either, just real normal people. But the real secret of this ad is how repetition and a simple hook can catch on if it's said over and over when it's linked to some meaning, like picking up the phone to your best friends.<\/p><p>If you got through the 90s, you definitely said wassssaaaaa to someone on a mobile. These days we have another word for a trend like that - it's the hashtag. Simple, repetitive and fun. Put the hashtag on a tee too and you're good.<\/p><p><\/p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0eEG5LVXdKo\/?modestbranding=1&amp;rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;vq=highres\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><h3><strong>Get a Mac<br><\/strong><\/h3><p>Brutal, honest, true. The genius of this marketing campaign is that the truth, and just saying it, doesn't need much more than two actors and a white background. Argument is something that everyone understands, and this intelligent, calm delivery of opposing views makes the watcher side with the logical choice... The Mac, and done gently with a dose of humour to get PC users onside without making them feel silly.<\/p><p>PC or a Mac? After watching this, there's only one choice.<br><\/p><p><\/p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZTttgc0DPA4\/?modestbranding=1&amp;rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;vq=highres\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><h3><strong>John Lewis at Christmas<br><\/strong><\/h3><p>Watch this, then ask yourself... did you feel anything? We've said it once and we'll say it again, marketing is not about selling product. It's about your brand, your values and your message. If you post content that makes people feel good, inspired, or warm, or supportive - all of that is associated with your brand and product. Some brands are so good at it, they become known for the ads themselves. When people see others wearing or using your product, it gives your brand a healthy dose of social proof and viewers a dash of FOMO: the perfect combo to get people wanting to buy in to what you\u2019re selling.<\/p><p>GoPro has become famous for this, by creating a series of awards around different content categories, encouraging their users to share their own content and become part of a community of GoPro creators.<\/p><p>Encouraging customer content is a natural fit for a camera company. But t-shirts lend themselves to a social share too. If you get a sick new print on a tee, you want the world to see! At Teemill, we\u2019re big fans of user-generated content.
