In other words, how many people know about your brand, how often they buy something, and how much they spend.

To be successful, you need people who are truly engaged in what you do and your product, people who will keep coming back to purchase from you again and again. It’s you reaching out into the world, sharing interesting content that other people want to read. And, with five billion people using the internet, your blog has the potential to reach more people than any magazine. A blog that has good search engine optimisation will appear at the top of Google when people search for topics related to your business. And as long as the content you create is relevant to your business, these visitors will be easy to convert to customers; they’ve come to your site looking for what you sell.

Businesses that have a blog and update it regularly get 55% more website visitors.

-- One Green Planet covers a range of topics that appeal to a sustainably-minded audience, from food and drink to animals, the earth, health and people. Regularly published articles keep the site up to date and at the top of Google.

To make the most of SEO, use data to plan content in advance and keyword research to support your intuition. Writing a blog about ‘sustainable Christmas gifts’ will do best around November and December. A blog about the coolest t-shirts might be best for spring and summer. Let common sense be the first step, then use data and keyword research to ensure the best results.

Action: Read our SEO series to find out how to optimise your blog and boost your traffic. Check out Teerank for trending keywords and blog suggestions.

Convert customers: share your mission

Your blog is your opportunity to discuss topics relevant to your business, share tips and news, and tell customers more about yourself and your mission. By the time they’ve read your blog, those visitors will be on board with your work and ready to invest.

70% of people prefer to learn about a company through articles rather than adverts.

Customers are more likely to engage (and re-engage) with a brand whose values align with their own. Preeta says:

“One Green Planet springboarded into existence as a response to my lifelong advocacy, and compassion for animals, social issues, and the environment. I call it “Lifestyle Activism,” which means the way you live your life, the causes and businesses you support, and the products and food you consume are all forms of activism. One Green Planet started as a passion project and grew into a spectacular movement with no business plan or exit strategy in sight; It’s just what I wanted to do with my life. But as a result, we became the first mainstream conscious lifestyle brand to connect the dots between the biggest global challenges. We packaged these issues into easy, accessible, and action-driven content that anyone could apply to their daily lives.”

Always consider the purpose of your blog: to engage new readers, to convert an existing audience, to sell a product or to share an idea. The purpose of the content will shape its structure and tone. And more than anything, write about things your readers care about.

“As the lines between editorial and sponsored content get blurrier in an increasingly “influencer-oriented” content world, this separation between editorial and sales must be preserved as a fundamental norm to isolate editorial teams from profit-driven pressures.” - Preeta

It’s a good idea to keep this separation at the planning stage, to ensure your blog has a good balance of editorial and product-based content. Then, a few well-planned product-based pieces can help increase sales.

After reading content about a product, 60% of people will then seek that product out.

Action: Plan out a mix of editorial content that will get customers engaging with your brand, and product-based content that will drive sales.

Re-engage customers: repurpose your content

As the owner of a brand, you need to protect your time, and that means optimising so you only do what’s truly valuable to get the best return on your investment of time and money. On average, people interact with a brand 7 times before buying something - so you need to do quite a bit of outreach before getting a sale.

Creating blog content that you can repurpose means you can reach more people, in more places, with less work. Take bits of your blogs and post them on your social media with a link to read more, send out a newsletter, or even share your news with the press to get publicity.

-- Rapanui re-purposed a blog about their t-shirts into a social media post and a feature in The Times.

Action: When planning your blogs, break them into smaller sections that can stand on their own, then repurpose those across all your communications.

Just get started

As with anything, the first step is the most important. Blogging is about sharing who you are and what you do; take courage in the fact that you created this business for a reason. If you make interesting and purpose-driven content, and optimise it properly, your audience will find you.

“Be authentic, there’s no replacement for that. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” - Preeta

The most successful companies in the world have one thing in common: an engaged customer base, a community of people that buy into what they do and how they do it, and that regularly choose to pay to support that.
