You're in the right place. Don't wait for inspiration to strike. Rely on these tried and tested methods for generating creative t-shirt ideas.

T-shirts stand as timeless symbols of personal style, where a simple canvas can evolve into a statement that resonates through print, colour, and message.

With their widespread appeal, designs have the potential to swiftly gain online traction, provided they have the right look at the right time.

Once you have your designs, the question then arises: How do seasoned designers create t-shirt designs that translate into thousands of sales? We can help there too.

Teemill gives you a pre-built website to customise so you can instantly sell your t-shirt designs online. With print-on-demand, you don't need to order loads of tees and manage your own stock. The most simple test when you're thinking about a new design is to ask yourself, "Would I wear this?" It's so much easier to be passionate about stuff you really love.

Start simple; no need to jump straight into Illustrator.

You can create really cool t-shirts even without a design background or any external software. Many have an idea of what they want but ask us to put some stuff like that in Teemill. So I’d always say to brands, if you have searched hard and we don’t have the stock designs you want, give us some feedback using the feedback button. Every day our designers create and upload stuff our customers and pro accounts tell us they need.”

The design team also talked about how they use the slogan templates to quickly build new text-based designs, saying that they never use Photoshop for slogan designs or puns: "If we’re doing words, we pick out a text template from the library that’s got the right look, drag it into the workspace and edit the text".

So lots of the work is done without needing to go out and spend time in Photoshop. But what if you want a super original t-shirt design?

First things first, the design process is a process - like a recipe. Lots of people have their own take on recipes, but the basic ingredients and steps are always the same. Research, inspiration, visualising and then design & save. Pay close attention to the fact that using your design software to actually create your design is the last thing you do. In other words, if you’re scratch-building some new designs, most of the work is not actually done in Photoshop. In other words, we print pixels, like a photo. We don’t use layers, you don’t need vectors, and there’s no special colour preparation needed. You can literally upload a photo from your phone and we can print it.

The only technical concept that matters if you’re creating a design is transparency.

The file format that Teemill uses is a PNG with transparency. A PNG is basically a JPEG, the same as photos on your phone, except that it has an extra feature in that images can have transparency too. This means that the area around your design will be clear, rather than an unwanted white colour. The best program for editing and saving up designs into a PNG with transparency is Photoshop - although you can use Illustrator if you prefer. If you don’t have these you can get them on a free trial, or there are free open source alternatives like GIMP that do pretty much the same thing.

Before you start creating your artwork, take a look at the Upload tab in the Studio for a couple more specs to take note of.

The finishing touches.

So you've created your awesome new design, and uploaded it to your site. When you’re done uploading your t-shirt design, you can easily add the same design to a different product. Designs you’ve previously used are saved in your artwork inside the product creator for you to use again with just one click. Sprinkle in a hoody or two, or a baseball tee to go with your t-shirts for a nice mix of styles for your customer.

The final touch is adding a great product description and take some amazing photos to show off your new design.

🚀 Start your free t-shirt store

Sign up now and start selling

Images: Tatty Devine, Betty and Brah, Moss Peak, Eco Kaila, She Shirts.

📅 Updated: October 8th, 2025
✍️ Written by: Sára Debreceni, Platform Content Lead
Sára has multiple years of experience at Teemill, producing tutorials, video walkthroughs and providing key insights to help sustainable e-commerce brands grow their online stores.

Stuck for t-shirt design ideas?
