Your first cuttings might just be a shout out in a report, a product feature or a full scale write up - either way it's a great way to build traffic, sales, and brand awareness. So how do you get featured? We get the inside track from communications professionals with over a decade of experience to learn more.<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/5da4dff9e6af42.31304101.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"39216072\"><\/p><p>Start first by thinking about the situation objectively. The press won't tend to come to you for good news. Reporters and journalists are generally smart cookies but (apart from Mystic Meg) they're definitely not mind readers. The only time a journalist will figure out what you're doing and call you up is if you've done something naughty.<\/p><p><strong>If you want to get noticed by the press and get a writeup, you'll need to reach out and pitch the story to a writer.<\/strong><\/p><blockquote><p>Nobody is going to write a story about how great your product is - that's an advert - so forget your product for a moment. The stuff that matters to writers only has two fundamental ingredients, <strong>the Issue<\/strong>, and <strong>the People<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/5da4e0f5eb4050.74814019.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"39216139\"><\/p><p>The issue might be climate change, and the people might be you doing something about it. Or the story might be about how you've built a brand because you wanted to do something about youth unemployment or human rights. There might be something big in the news about Vegan Entrepreneurs and your brand might have a story to tell about how you've been affected by the issue and what you've done about it.<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/5da4e3aa7ef935.81406955.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"39216902\"><\/p><p>This point is so true that it's worth digging out any item on a newsagent shelf, or on any news website:<\/p><p><strong>Stories are about about Issues and news is about People.<\/strong><\/p><p>And reporters are people too: Imagine for a second you're a writer. You're paid to produce content and have a deadline to deliver that work each week, or even each day. It can be hard work to find great stories. That's where the press release comes from. It's basically a format that works for reporters as much as anybody - it makes it easy to write up an article as it contains the story, the people, some facts and quotes to use (basically a skeleton of an article) that the writer can use to work into their own take.<\/p><p>These days the press release format isn't really necessary. You are as likely to get features by tweeting or DMing someone as sending in something formally. Whatever you do make sure what you send is a genuinely interesting and useful story.<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/5da4e2be953cc0.90092819.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"39216721\"><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/5da4e2e18165b9.20103511.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"39216764\"><\/p><p>You won't be the first startup to have the idea, and their inbox is likely flooded with people sending similar stuff. So make sure you go for quality, not quantity. And make sure it's personal - if a writer usually writes about finance don't send them a story about your hamsters. A few quality lines summing up your story and why you think it's relevant to them personally will go a long way.<\/p><p>You might have to send hundreds of approaches before you get a bite. If you do, make sure you're ready to answer questions factually and also that you have some great quality photos ready - most writers these days know their biggest audience is online.<br><br><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/5da4e44f23f460.79624211.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"39217054\"><\/p><p>Our last tip? Remember your store is online, and that web pages last longer than print. So focus your efforts online and if you get a piece, request a link back for the credit for your photos.
