We talk about how to build trust and how to build your credibility online which is all part of the fundamental SEO algorithm.

This is part of our Learn SEO series. You can check out our other blogs where we talk about the principles of SEO - relevance, quality and trust, the importance of keyword research and how to use Answer the Public for better content in the SEO category of our Academy.

We're going to use our SEO series analogy of Google being like a digital High Street to talk about trust and credibility. Let's imagine we're there now, and we want to buy a chocolate bar.

Relevance.

First we look at what's relevant, so in this scenario, we would only be looking at sweet shops or convenience stores.

Quality.

Our next step would be to look at the quality of these stores. We would look at the shops to make sure they look legitimate and meet our standards.

Trust.

The next important factor in our decision-making of which shop we go in first, is whether we trust the store and the products sold.

Building up customer trust and making sure we've got lots of links and recommendations to our store helps to boost our search rankings when we are competing against other sites to that top spot on Google.

The way that Google traditionally gave a trust score was by using links from endorsements.

For example, if we sold chocolate on our website and another website called chocolatereviews.com said "this particular chocolate bar sold by Teemill is brilliant" and had a link to our product or site, that then counts as a link. That link builds up our trust score by being an endorsement from them to us. If we said on our Teemill store "chocolatereviews.com is really good" and linked them, then the endorsement is from us to them.

Here's a bit of history. Google's first version of the trust scoring metric was called Page Rank. It's a catalyst that set Google apart from the other search engine algorithms. The old school stuff like Meta Keywords is still relevant today and is now keyword matching. This is why Google used the function of relevance, quality and trust to list results rather than just relying on relevance.

There are two ways that you can get a high trust score from Google.

One way is by having lots of links and endorsements from many smaller websites. Each of these smaller websites could have a trust score of 1. So if 35 small websites have endorsed you, then you would have a trust score of 35.

Another way is by having one big website endorse you. This website might be so big that it already has a score of say, 35 and when they link out to your website, it would also give you a trust score of 35.

If the large, popular website was the BBC and they wrote a story about your store saying "this website has the next generation of fashion with awesome, sustainable t-shirts" and endorsed you with a link, your site would then receive the same trust score as the BBC website.

This is a very simplified version of how Google's trust score works and it has changed a lot over time - it is now a lot more dynamic but the principle is still remains the same.

When you launch a Teemill store and you've done some really high quality keyword research, you've got some great keywords on your store, you've used them to write helpful blogs and you've got a site packed full of quality content, then the next step is to build some trust so that Google can see you're a credible brand.

One of the ways you can get endorsed is to get other people with credible websites to link to yours. There's lots of different ways you can get people to do that. Sometimes it's as simple as asking them to feature your brand on their blog or you can send out press releases and get websites to talk about your brand or product.

Inbound recommendations and endorsements are how Google scores your website for trust. It helps boost the trust part of the search engine algorithm and is needed for the function that uses relevance, quality and trust to give you a much higher chance of climbing the rankings of Google.

One little caveat we should say is that there as a way to do this wrong too. One of the first things that people did when they learned that links from other websites was how Google worked, was to make spam websites and build loads of links.

If you have loads of spam websites linking to your store and try to cheat, then the good people of Google are pretty smart and can figure that out. They'll probably identify these websites as ways of cheating, and they can actually subtract from your trust score because they are not credible endorsements.

- When Teemillers She Shirts first launched, they built trust by getting their brand featured in relevant online articles magazines that linked back to their store.

So remember, make sure the sites that link to your site are credible themselves and relevant to your topic. If your brand is a chocolate brand and the biggest chocolate forum or the biggest cocoa news site says "you're great" then Google will boost your trust score and credibility, and ultimately your search engine ranking positions.

Check out the next blog in the Learn SEO serieshere and remember to keep up to date with the latest Teemill tutorials and videos, make sure yousubscribeto us on YouTube.

In this SEO tutorial, we talk about trust and how to show your customers that your online store is trustworthy and credible.
Instantly recognisable by their unique and edgy style, Nocturnal Creature's photography is fresh, fun and real.
