It's about making sure that we figure out what kind of language people are actually typing into Google and what words they use when they're searching.

We call those words keywords, key phrases or search key phrases. It's important to use keywords that people are using to search with on your website, then Google can see that your website is relevant to those searches and feature you in the search results. That's what key phrase research is. It's about figuring out what people are searching for and putting it onto your site.

To demonstrate keyword research, first we need to know our intent. As we mentioned in the first episode, the difference between someone's intent and the words they would use to perform a Google search, is that intent is the overarching thing that they want. Intent is usually either a product or to find an answer, and the keywords are the words they would actually type into a search engine to find the answer to match their criteria.

For example, we want a new fishing rod, so our intent is to buy a fishing rod. Key phrases would be what we would type into a search engine to find this new fishing rod. Here are some examples:

"Fishing rod"

"Fishing rod online"

"Buy fishing rod online"

"Buy fishing rod online UK"

These examples show the process of thinking about what people might actually type in when they are searching. This is the difference between what people actually say and what they actually mean.

- Keyword research is important for any brand trying to improve their SEO, big or small. Teemill powered store BBC Earth uses simple, descriptive keywords in their products, descriptions and collection titles to help the right people find their products.

So when we do keyword research, what we need to do is to take our product or content into consideration. Say for example we have a tiger t-shirt but we want to call it "Jungle T-shirt" because it's about jungle conservation. Through the process of keyword research for this product we would develop some key phrases:

"Tiger T-shirt"

"Men's Tiger T-shirt"

"Men's White Tiger T-shirt"

Those key phrases mean calling the tee "Men's White Tiger T-shirt" instead of "Jungle T-shirt" is now a better match for what your customers might type into their search engine and will increase your chances of your page and product being more easily seen. That's the power of keyword research.

The most important thing is to use simple descriptive language. It's all about answering the question, "what would someone type into Google?" to find your product or content.

The process of keyword research can be helped with tools. There's some great research tools out there and the best ones will help to increase your ranking on Google. Our blog on how to use Answer the Public includes some great tips on how to create content that ranks in Google.

Google Trends is another good example. You can type a word into Google Trends and it will give you some ideas of other phrases used that are similar to your search field. There's also a Google Keyword Planner tool you can use to develop ideas and synonyms - or you can stick to the old-fashioned way and do it in your head or try asking your mates.

Pro tip: If you use the Google Keyword Planner tool to develop and save all of your keyword ideas as you develop them, later on if you decide to get into advertising, you can take the keywords in your planner and transfer them straight into your ads account. Then you can make sure that your store starts showing up in the advertising section on Google when someone enters those keywords into their search criteria.

The first stage of the process is to identify a key phrase for each product or web page that is the most likely phrase a person would type into Google to find it. That's your keyword research. The next step is to make sure that you use the keywords you have identified for the title and description of the product. If you're building a page or writing a blog, include these keywords in the title and body too.

- The Marine Conservation society use clear product titles such as "Whale swimming t-shirt" and relevant keywords in their product descriptions like "ocean", "plastic", "sea" and "fish".

As long as you use simple descriptive words within the title and in the body of the page, Google will be able to see it. The next time your potential customer types in this particular keyword phrase, the Google algorithm will know that your website is relevant to your customer because the keywords already exist in your store.

Thanks for tuning in, you can check out the next blog in the Learn SEO serieshere.
