Enable YouTube Shopping to feature products around your videos

When you enable YouTube Shopping, your audience will see a link to your store on your channel homepage and be able to browse a dedicated Store tab.

You can also choose specific products to show up underneath specific videos so viewers can shop exactly what you're wearing.

Bonus tip: add your store as one of the key links that show up in your channel description too, for easy access

2. Wear your products

Here's our biggest piece of advice up front: Make sure you're wearing your own merch. Sounds simple but it's easy to miss. Order your products at wholesale prices from the Teemill Sample Store.

Your subscribers care about you. So to want to buy your products, they need to see you wearing your own stuff. It builds trust and shows that you're really invested in what you're selling to them.

-- Kevin Richardson, AKA the Lion Whisperer, wears his t-shirts in his content often and his team are always on it when it comes to linking directly to the products he's sporting to maximise relevance, on and off YouTube - more on that below

3. Grab some stills

When filming in your merch, grab a few selfies or shorter video clips in-situ to reuse in your Community posts, add to your store's website and on other social media channels later.

-- The Beast Philanthropy team found that when Mr Beast (Jimmy) himself wears their products, conversions go up, so they dedicated some time to shoot a few photos and make their site all about the creator rather than showing generic mockup models.

4. Include a direct call to action to shop

All of the YouTubers we work with wear their own t-shirts regularly in videos. And when they specifically point them out in their uploads and encourage their audience to check out their store, they see a massive spike in traffic and sales.

When Beast Philanthropy included a direct call to action within their video (from 4:13), it generated the most traffic and sales they had ever experienced in a single day (+2180% vs the days prior).

5. Tell people why you love your products - in a dedicated video or a shorter segment

Highlighting features you love about your products, like the sustainability credentials, the colour or the fit, and talking a bit about your design process will bring to life your merch drops.

Creator Holly Laing, who partnered with the Happi Inc store, published several videos celebrating the launch of her clothing line with uploads titled 'THE MAKING OF MY CLOTHING LINE' and 'BEHIND THE SCENES OF MY PHOTOSHOOT'.

Holly also created YouTube Shorts featuring entertaining skits to create engagement with the products. It's obvious she loves the products herself. There's nothing worse than influencers trying to sell you stuff you know they don't even use themselves...

If you've put a lot of work into your merch and think your audience will be interested in the process, or you want to dive deeper into the sustainability elements, it's worth creating a dedicated video all about your products. If that feels a little much, add shorter segments to several videos calling out your merch shop.

6. Experiment with limited edition drops (whilst keeping an always-on range)

Launching a set of designs available for a limited time only works incredibly well for some channels. It creates a sense of urgency and scarcity, encouraging viewers not to hang around for too long before they checkout.

-- TPD.TV (168k subs) has seen great success with limited edition drops at key points of the year, with a big buildup featuring original photography

With a Teemill store, you can set your site to private before your limited edition launch as you prepare it for the big day.

To maximise the impact of your merch as a revenue driver, create a core range of products that are always available to shop, supplemented by limited edition designs related to specific campaigns, episodes or series you are launching on your channel. This leads us on to...

7. Tie your merch to a specific series on your channel

Merch that is closely related to your channel's activity works best.

That's why the Yoga With Adriene pop-up shop goes big on marketing every January, when Adriene takes subscribers through 30 days of a carefully curated programme of guided workouts. Her community can wear their merch whilst following along.

8. Build hype ahead of a merch drop

Whether limited edition or not, every launch should have some build-up to get your audience excited. TPD.TV, a channel touring festivals around the world, are masters at hype-building.

Check out the intro to this video, announcing a new drop coming soon:

TPD.TV posted several times in the lead-up to this launch and afterwards to get their viewers excited. This Reel shared on their Instagram page is a great short-form example.

As a result of successful sneak peeks and hype-building, TPD.TV sold 710 units on the first day of their Christmas drop in 2023.

9. Use Community posts to build engagement

Don't forget to utilise all the tools YouTube gives you for reaching your audience. If you aren't using Community posts yet, now's the time to start. They show up just like your videos on users' YouTube homepages.

10. Ask subscribers what they want to see

You can also use Community posts to create polls for your audience and ask them which designs they like the most or what they want to see in your shop. It makes them feel included and helps to make sure that what you design will actually resonate.

-- Team Charles-Barclay (100k subs) used Community polls to involve fans in their merch design process

11. Create exclusive members-only merch as a key perk

YouTube memberships are a great additional way to generate reliable income from your channel and give people a chance to support you on a monthly basis. Special merch designs and deals can make memberships sound even sweeter.

Once the Lion Whisperer launched some exclusive designs only available for members, those designs quickly became some of their best-sellers.

Making your biggest fans feel valued with some extra treats like this builds your relationship with them.

Remember to add exclusive merch as a perk to your YouTube memberships.

12. Launch a charity collaboration

Supporting a creator you love AND supporting a great cause you both care about? That's a recipe for sky-high engagement.

When travel and DIY creators Kinging-It (346k subs) launched their Put Foot Rally T-shirt (with some strong photography of the creators wearing the merch) it raised £10k for The Put Foot Foundation, helping to provide underprivileged children with a pair of new school shoes.

-- Kinging-It use Teemill to create planet-friendly merch for adventurers, using professional photography to bring it to life

Kinging-It's success was down to wearing their merch in their videos, sharing Community posts and supporting it all on other platforms like Instagram too. And that leads us on to some other things you can do outside of YouTube to get even more eyes on your merch...

-- Charities and organisations like Sea Shepherd use their Teemill merch to increase the impact of their campaigns

Things to try outside of YouTube

1. Share merch to other social media platforms

If you've built a large following on YouTube, chances are you're probably already active on other platforms like Instagram, X and TikTok. You may have set up a community on another platform like Patreon or Substack.

Make sure that the content around your merch drops is being shared across all your channels. Repurposing your content is something you're likely familiar with as a YouTube creator, so apply the same principles to promoting your products everywhere.

-- Kinging-It repurpose their content across social platforms to reach more of their audience

You can integrate your merch store into other apps just like you can through YouTube Shopping. Check out our guide to setting up Instagram/Facebook shopping here, so you can tag specific products directly in your posts.

-- The Lion Whisperer uses subtle tags to highlight relevant products on Instagram without appearing too salesy

2. Use email marketing to engage subscribers

Once you start making sales of your products, it's important to retarget those customers with future news about your merch. Building an email list to do that is a great way to have more control over communicating with your fans since you won't have to rely on algorithms to serve them your content.

With Teemill Pro, you get access to Teemail, our built-in email marketing tool. Record short form 'thank you' videos

Since video is your primary medium, use that to your advantage to connect more deeply with customers. Film some short-form videos of you wearing your merch and thanking fans for supporting your shop. You can then add this to your email newsletters.

When the Lion Whisperer added a link to a short 'thank you' video to the automated email their customers receive after they place their first order, they saw their click rate go up to a whopping 54%.

-- Check out Kevin's personal thank you message here to inspire your own

Case Study: The Lion Whisperer

By implementing the tips above, the Lion Whisperer merch store saw its best-performing month ever in March 2024, generating 61% more revenue than in December, during the peak gifting season.

When uploading every video, the team makes sure to tag the specific products that Kevin is wearing underneath the video using YouTube Shopping.

Weekly Teemail newsletters inform previous customers about new videos as well as related merch. Kevin is also active on Instagram, where every product is tagged. Even photos of specific lions, which have dedicated designs in his store, are tagged with their own products.

Often, the captions don't mention the merch at all, making this a subtle way to prompt purchases rather than explicit salesy promotions.

The fact that the merch supports the Kevin Richardson Sanctuary and that Kevin emphasises this when talking about his merch, means customers feel good about buying the products.
