So if you're here because you want to remove backgrounds on designs you'll be selling on t-shirts, hoodies, notebooks, art prints, mugs or other print-on-demand products, create a free store now and make your life easier.

🚀 Join 10,000+ stores selling their designs on sustainable print-on-demand products with Teemill - Sign up for a free store

Why removing backgrounds is important for print-on-demand designs

Removing backgrounds is one of those things that can massively improve print quality. And better print quality leads to more positive reviews from customers, building trust online, as well as a higher rate of returning shoppers.

Our team in the factory often faces problems with printing designs that aren’t colour-matched with the base product, often putting white designs on white products, for example, resulting in a lower quality result.

If adding a design to a white product, make sure it has a transparent background and avoid leaving white elements inside the design. Our printers will place white ink on top of your white product if it is included in the design file, resulting in poor prints.

When exporting your design from graphic design software such as Photoshop or Canva, use background remover tools and export the artwork as a PNG with a transparent background.

This also applies to black designs on black products, blue on blue, and so on. Rather than trying to match the colour in the design exactly to the base product, simply make it transparent for a cleaner look.

For a more detailed breakdown of design set-up best practices, head to this tutorial.

1. Using the Lasso tool

(Guaranteed to work, takes ages but totally worth it.)

Open up Photoshop and upload your design.

By using the Lasso tool (third icon down on the left-hand toolbar) and zooming in, you can trace around the outside of your design accurately. This is time-consuming but worth it.

Near the bottom right of your Photoshop screen you will see Layers. Select your design and Ctrl C, then Ctrl V (copy and paste).

Now you will have two layers, Layer One (your design) and Background.

Click on the eye icon next to Background. This will hide the background layer and replace it with a grey chequered background, which indicates there is now nothing there.

You can now drag the Background layer into the trash, leaving you with just your accurately cutout design.

Save your cutout Photoshop design onto your computer as a PNG file.On older versions of Photoshop, you will need to go to File - Save for Web and select PNG.

Now when you upload your file to Teemill, you will only have a perfectly cut out design with no white background.

2. Using the Magic Wand tool

(Might work, but takes a bit less time.)

Upload your design to Photoshop.

Use the Magic Wand tool (fourth icon down on the left-hand toolbar) and click the area you want to remove.

Use the Shift button to correct any non-selected areas whilst still using the Magic Wand tool, this let's you re-adjust the selected area you wish to cut out.

You can also adjust the accuracy when using this method by adjusting the Tolerance (top of screen). The Tolerance setting controls the sensitivity of the magic wand selection.

Now the white background has been selected and is separate from our design, we can delete it.

3. Using Colour Range

(Pretty quick, also might work ok. Great for removing white highlights too.)

Once your design is uploaded to Photoshop, go to Select - Colour Range - Highlights.

You can change the tolerance of the colour range and knock entire colours out, so your design is selected and separate from the background. This can also be used to remove unwanted colours from within your design and doesn't have to be just for white.

So there we have it. Three ways to get rid of an unwanted white background using Photoshop. You can use the Lasso tool to select the object to copy and paste it out from the background, you could use the Magic Wand tool to select whole areas and delete them or finally, you could use Colour Range and knock out entire colours out of the design.

We hope you’ve found this useful and if you have any questions or suggestions for us about this video or blog, or anything else we can help you with at Teemill (or even if you just want to say "hi"), please send in your feedback using the Feedback tool on your dashboard.

🚀 Ready to get started making money with your designs? - Sign up for a free Teemill store

In this tutorial, we show you how to remove backgrounds from your print-on-demand designs so they're ready to sell in your e-commerce store.
T-shirts are timeless, and with their simple shape there’s no limit to what you can do with print, colour and your message So how do professional designers create t-shirt designs that get thousands of sales?
We're loving the return of campaign tees and with so many issues in the world today, there's never been a better time to use the power of fashion to change the way we want the world to be.
Wintercroft create awesome geometric animals from waste materials like the cardboard you have in your cupboard.
