SEO: How to get to the top of Google
SEO stands for search engine optimisation, and that means getting your brand to show up top of Google's search results. So how do you start climbing those search rankings?

Search Engine Optimisation is all about getting your brand to the top of Google. There’s a lot of chatter around SEO for good reason - most of the traffic for any given search goes to just a handful of web pages. In the past, a brand would need to raise the cash to build a store in every high street, today there's nothing stopping you capturing a whole market using your laptop or smartphone. So how do you start climbing those search rankings?

How Google decides what pages to show first

The first thing to understand about SEO is the, sometimes confusing, simplicity. People type words into Google that describe what they are searching for. Google brings back pages that it thinks are most relevant to those words. So, as well as having a technically professional site, it's the content on it that Google cares most about.

To be clear, the pages that show up first in the natural rankings are not there because they pay to be there. The pages that show up first do so because they contain the most relevant high quality content relating to that search. That is why Google is popular. It is the best at getting the most relevant results to show up first. And the best thing of all? You don't need to pay for it. SEO is about publishing high quality content.

The decision Google makes about what to show for any given search is basically a three-part thing:

First, does the page contain content related to the words? Second, is the page itself built professionally? And third, is this site trusted by other web pages?

Imagine you’re searching for “BBC” and there are two web pages out there. One is by a guy called Bob who home built a site about bacon - Bob's Bacon Carnage. The other is by the BBC - as in, the Doctor Who, Eastenders and Strictly Beeb.

The BBC website contains the word BBC, lots of pictures including the BBC logo, and loads of relevant high quality content like film reviews and BBC TV schedules. The BBC have a professional team optimising the code and it’s lightning fast. Millions of other sites link to BBC.co.uk, and their links are often surrounded by relevant words like "BBC". In comparison, Bob's website runs alright, is populated with a few pics of his mate's pets and, while some sites link to Bob's Bacon Carnage site, it's mostly his family who also have small blogs.

Because the BBC website contains relevant, quality content, is fast, and because many other people online link to it or endorse it, when people search "BBC" in Google it shows up first. Bob's Bacon Carnage site doesn't show up anywhere near it.

Consequently, BBC gets all the traffic for the search, and Bob's site does not. And if we think about it, it's fair enough. Go ahead and try that search for yourself. In this example, the searcher wanted the BBC, and they got it, so they'll use Google again.

Getting to the top of Google search results is about three things

1. Relevant, high quality content

2. A professionally built site

3. Showing Google your site is recommended by other sites

Before we go any further, we're going to make the job 30% easier for you. Because you don't need to worry about the code side. Our code team is constantly working to optimise Teemill stores, so Google already knows that your page is built professionally.

That leaves just two things for you to do as Teemill store owner. Publish quality content, and get trusted websites to link to your store to show Google you're legit.

Ready to nail your SEO? Let's go.

1. Publish quality content.

What we're talking about here are words and pictures on a page you publish on the internet. Most of the content-side of work with SEO is in choosing your words carefully so they match what your target market might be searching for. There's lots of room for adding and improving the content on your store. Products and collections have titles, descriptions and images. The homepage can contain images, titles and text to describe your products and brand.

Blogs are the powerful publishing tool to optimise your store for SEO.

Creating a blog on your store means that you can fill each post with quality content and pick up more holistic searches. Where product pages can be optimised to show up for people searching for specific products, your blog can grab traffic for people searching for more general stuff like tips, advice, stories or recommendations.

Research the most relevant words and phrases to use

Wherever you are putting your content on your store, the trick to writing and creating search engine optimised content is to think descriptively.

If the question is “what would someone type into Google if they wanted this?” then the answer to that question is what search marketers call a search phrase. For each page you make, think about the search phrase that is most relevant. A good habit to get into every time you create a new product, page or blog (or if you want to go over your existing site and improve it for SEO) is to decide the most appropriate search phrase that describes the page you're working on.

This process is called keyphrase research. A nifty site you can use to help with this is Answer the Public.

The more specific your words and phrases, the better they are for SEO

There should only really be one search phrase relevant to each page, so its better to be specific. For example if someone is looking for a Red Fox Men's T-shirt, that's different to a Red Fox Women's T-shirt. That’s one of the reason’s it’s not possible to have duplicate names and descriptions on Teemill.

Optimising your SEO isn't about tricking Google. If your page contains the most relevant content for what someone is searching for, Google wants you to be at the top. The way to do that is by working with the algorithm, not against it.

Spamming your site with the same word 100 times or chucking in loads of frequently searched keyphrases that are irrelevant to your brand isn't going to work. Also, if you try to outwit Google, you're going to lose.

It's about quality, not quantity.

Google monitor the clicks and the engagement on your store to see how long searchers stay on your site, or if they go back to Google to find something else. This is called bounce rate. If you write a load of stuff just to get the clicks, but when the searcher visits your store they bounce, Google will de-rank you. Equally, even if you only get a couple of clicks but those people love your stuff, perhaps because the blog you wrote is a great read - long and interesting with lovely pictures - Google will boost your rankings.

Don't stress if people are landing on your blog more than your products. If people enjoy your blog, they're likely to be a fan of your products too. And even if someone doesn't make a purchase straight away, there's every chance they'll return later or share your blog with other like-minded people, meaning even more relevant traffic going to your store.

SEO content checklist:

Is the search phrase in the title?

Is there some high quality written content on the page that is relevant to the search?

Is the content naturally written and useful / interesting / compelling (and not spammy and stuffed with keyphrases unnaturally)

Are the pictures on the page relevant to the search?

Is the keyphrase relevant to the content on the site in general?

Publishing very high quality content is the best investment you can make in a website. And remember everything you write or curate can be recycled in your social media and newsletter.

2. Build trust in your site

The second (and final, you'll be pleased to know) part of SEO is trust. Trust is Google’s way of deciding whether or not your content is credible. One way they do this is by analysing the sites that link to your site and what those sites are about. Are they relevant to your content? And are they trusted too?

If you have a store and a newspaper writes a fashion piece for men, all about a new trend for Cool Men's Slogan Prints - and features your product, linking to your store - Google will detect this link as being an endorsement of your content and bring you higher up in the results of relevant searches.

There are lots of different ways to build this kind of trust, but in short the method is to get other people to write and talk about your brand online. Specifically, independent websites, blogs and news outlets. You’ll both get instant traffic from those links and also be seen by Google as being credible for relevant searches.

Recap:

With Teemill, you've already got a professionally built store

Think about what people would search to find your stuff and publish high quality content

Get inbound links to your store from trusted, relevant sites

SEO, search engine optimisation is all about getting to the top of Google.
