This time we're going to take a look at Teemill store, Nocturnal Creature.

Nocturnal Creature is an awesome brand and it's got a cool custom domain - nocturnalcreature.co.uk. We're going to be featuring Teemillers (with each store's permission) to say thanks for giving us a five-star view on Google. We really appreciate it so thank you.

If you're one of those people that has left us a five star review on Google, tell us in the comments of the YouTube video above and we'll see if we can get you a shout out on one of our upcoming videos.

Firstly, Nocturnal Creature is a really cool brand. We talked about SEO being a mixture of relevance, quality and trust. Nocturnal Creature has some really high-quality pictures and content which has built a lot of trust and credibility within their scene. It's for people who "When night falls, the dancefloor calls".

In this blog, we're going to be focusing on boosting the relevance of the Nocturnal Creature website which will help SEO, starting with keyword research.

One of the best places to do keyword research is Google Trends. You can access this for free by searching for "Google Trends".

To begin, we'll type in some of the words that Nocturnal Creature have used into Google Trends. Next step is to compare their usage.

On their homepage are some descriptive words. "Nocturnal Creature London is an independent clothing brand" so we're going to compare "independent clothing brand" against some alternatives:

Music t-shirt

Techno t-shirt

DJ t-shirt

Remember to make sure when you use Google Trends, you're using the right country for your target market. We are using results from the United Kingdom.

You can see the use of the keywords by the difference in the search history. As you can see, the words "independent clothing brand" are not searched for as much as other words like "music t-shirt".

That makes sense because music t-shirt is arguably a bit too broad and you need to be careful of the intent. People searching for "music t-shirts" could be people interested in playing the cello rather than people interested in rad streetwear for the London techno night scene.

Expanding our keyword search, we compared "streetwear" which might be a bit closer to our customer's intent. The result spoke for itself:

The next step is to change the language on the store to use this better keyword phrase.

There are three areas we would look at to make an impact on the homepage. The title and description of the page (which Google looks at), the H1 (that's the big text on the banner of your page) and the body text (the rest of the spiel).

In your page editor, you can see the page title and description in the Save tray. This is the information searchers will see if Google shows them your page in their search results.

For Nocturnal Creature, we realised the meta description gets cut off when it appears on Google so it might be that there are too many words being used. It's best to keep titles 50-60 characters and descriptions under 160 characters. It's okay to be brutal with descriptions so you're more precise and efficient, containing just your main 1-3 keywords for that page. Your page editor will tell you if you are over the recommended cut-offs.

Where it previously said an "independent clothing brand" in the description, we've changed it to "streetwear" because that key word phrase beats the other when it comes to SEO. It's better to use the best descriptive work that fits with your brand identity.

Pro Tip: Don't say what your brand is not, say something that you are. For example, Nocturnal Creature's meta description said "an independent clothing brand that offers a different style of that found on the High Street". Google will see the words "high street" and now think the page is relevant to searches of High Street, although this is opposite of what this brand represents. So rather than say what it isn't, make sure to say what it is.

You can still include phrases in your description or pages that have little or no SEO value and that's okay. This is because SEO is not about talking to Google to get to the top of the search ranking, it's about talking to a customer. Make sure to write naturally and have fun.

Once you've levelled up your description, it's a good idea to skim through the rest of your homepage and use more precise words that have come from your keyword research. We've changed where it says "independent clothing brand" lower down the page to "streetwear" again to keep including the keywords that work.

You can still put a few more keywords in here and there but remember you don't need to make three different pages for each keyword. It's better to make one high-quality focus page that's talking about the brand then Google can associate all of those words with it and start building your search ranking.

So you'll see that actually doing SEO is really simple. It's about thinking of your store, making sure that the content is really high-quality and that there's original, natural and genuinely helpful descriptions on there too. Doing keyword research and comparing the words that you want to use by using tools like Google Trends and the Google Keyword Planner will make sure you use the most precise words, rather than cramming it all in and end up keyword stuffing.

Now that we've done some SEO for Nocturnal Creature's store, what will happen now is that it's far more likely the website will show up for searches that relate to or contain the phrase "streetwear". It's more helpful for the customer this way, it's better for the brand and it's what Google wants too because it means their search results are much more accurate.

Once you've done keyword research, make sure to apply these new phrases to all the content on your website, not just the description and homepage. Google Trends is a good tool but there are loads of other tools that can go far more in depth in keyword research that you can use. Try using SEO Profiler or Moz.
