In this dose of Teemill inspo, we catch up with their founder to get his advice on how to create original photography for your brand.

Instantly recognisable by their original and edgy style, Nocturnal Creature are one of those brand's that inspires people just starting out and cause big businesses sleepless nights. Their photography is fresh, fun and real and they show how a mobile phone, and some friends in a city can build something that's exactly what people want. Not manufactured or marketed - rad, real and genuine.

In this blog we've pulled together a handful of the best Nocturnal Creature photography for a dose of brand building inspo.

Now, we'll hand the microphone to Dave, the founder of NC to fill in the gaps. Over to you Dave...

"The shape of a t-shirt is mature, so I don't try and reinvent wheel with that. Black and white tees and tops are super popular because they just work. But there's so much you can do creatively around that. I've gone for minimalist logos and typefaces and tried to create a really edgy feel. A big part of that is my shoots and picking cool models."

"I go out and scout locations around London first. It's just a tube ticket and a walkabout. When you have models with you, it helps to shoot a few locations and so you're looking for places that are both cool but also sort of tucked away. You don't want loads of people watching as your models will feel a bit awkward. Look around corners and behind buildings."

The techno music scene is small and tight, so I realised one day that if I wanted to connect with people in the scene and build a brand that spoke to them, I could just get them involved.

So I asked people on nights out - DJs or people with connections to club nights if they’d come to a shoot. I gave them free product and told them to wear whatever they’d wear normally.

"To make photos look cool try and create angles by shooting from the side or from low down or up high, and try to get playful with your model. Angles and different poses give your shots energy and make the products pop. If the background has lines in it too that can help create perspective and depth."

For Dave, capturing amazing photography doesn't require a whole load of tech. It's anyone's game with smartphones and free editing apps:

"Some of these shots were taken on a DSLR but having to take your photos home, edit... then transfer, I think they just slow you down and get in the way of what you're trying to achieve. I think in future I'll only use my iPhone and do the editing on the tube."

"When it comes to picking models you don't need an agency. Real people are the best, and if you can get them, your customers. I think the brands of tomorrow are smaller, cooler and real. The high street can't buy authenticity and nobody wants airbrushed models in mass produced product. They want to be part of something real."

"Perfection is boring, originality is cool."

"One of the things that's important is to make sure you get permission from your model to use the shots just for peace of mind and sort them out with a product. You can also tell them when the shots are online and ask if they'll repost and tag your brand."

Getting the light right and shooting when it's cloudy are useful tips that Dave has learnt from his NC shoots. Also, the best photos come when everyone is having fun:

"Most of my models are just friends and maybe haven't modelled before. So sometimes people can look a bit serious or stiff. If you're organising the shoot you'll probably be stressed out and concentrating but that can stress your model out. You have to remember to smile and make everyone laugh. That's how to get the relaxed poses and a nice expression. Not necessarily laughing but like, not moody."

And for Dave's single most important tip if you want to recreate awesome photos like Nocturnal's?

"Just get out there and taking photos. Without my photos my brand doesn't exist. So you have to actually go take some shots. The first shoots I did were absolutely tragic. Blurry, over edited, a bit weird. But you just come back and learn and go again. It doesn't take long before you're decent actually. It only takes a couple of shoots to get good."

"But you'll never get good if you don't start. Get a few products, do little and often and for me it's the one thing that's driven sales. That's why photography is basically my whole brand strategy."

Thanks to Dave from Nocturnal Creature for some useful photography tips and brand building inspo. Now all that's left for you to do is get out there and take some shots!

Nocturnal Creatures are a cool brand influenced by London nightlife.
