'Dear Mr. Bin Man' is a roadmap for how we can save our planet, first eliminating waste then using technology to build and scale a new kind of future. We hope you enjoy it.

We need your help: Please Share this TED talk. Ideas are the first step towards action and if you think these ideas can help others figure out how we can actually solve sustainability, sharing is a positive step you can take.

Best sustainability TED talk quotes

We’ve collected a few of the best bits and highlights from the TED talk. For starters, here’s a sense of the scale of the fashion industry’s sustainability issue.

Here’s just a snapshot of what they're up against, something simple like clothes - we are all wearing them. 60% of clothing is made from plastic. 99% ends up in landfill or incineration. That’s 40 tonnes burned or buried every second.

What this fashion industry TED talk really highlights is that if we want to make sustainability a reality, we need to change not just products but the places they come from, and that means considering the redesign of the system - starting with waste. We’re in this situation because the way we’ve designed our economy doesn’t factor in the price (or cost) of waste properly.

Stopping pollution is punished. Pollution, is rewarded... Just checking, are we all cool with that?

There are strong environmental reasons to reduce waste, but it's also an interesting place where the environment and the economy both agree. That in itself is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in sustainable design, which often incorrectly is boxed in with compromises. In the TED talk one passage on circular design revealed the downsides of a linear model with real clarity.

A linear model actively destroys value with each transaction and from what I know about business, that’s not a smart way to play the game. It trashes our environment too, by the way, but; stupid games win stupid prizes.

Circular design gives us a framework to solve sustainability, and at the same time creates a pathway to guide more sustainable startups to success by showing new founders how to find and build on opportunities to make systems more efficient. Once we look at things from the perspective of how we can build a sustainable, circular economy rather than if or when, it does not take long before action follows.

This is our recipe for progress: Design out waste from the model itself, using tech if that’s what it takes, then reinvest the savings to make progress on sustainability.

One of the common themes in this TED talk for entrepreneurs is the role of startups and founders, and how specifically sustainability startups will probably provide the planet with the solutions we need. After all, businesses exist to solve problems - profit is the reward - and there’s a lot of growth for groups working on problems the size of the entire planet.

Because if the economy is a big game made up by adults, and we’re the adults now, any of us can choose the rules, move pieces around, and change the game.

If you found these ideas helpful, we hope you will act on them and make these ideas real. One of the fastest, easiest ways to do that is to please share this video far and wide. You may just inspire the change we need to see in the world.

The best TED talk about entrepreneurship and the circular economy business model in fashion.
