That means the content you create must be suited to TikTok's short form, organic video format. At the heart of the app are a few key things:<\/p><p><strong>Lofi, in the moment production<\/strong><\/p><p>The emphasis on amateur production is another way that TikTok is giving smaller businesses the chance to make it big. All you need is the app and a smartphone - in fact, amateur filming is encouraged and is what performs the best on the app.<\/p><p>Making videos with complex transitions that are too polished will make your content look salesy. Users can spot it immediately. Keep your locations, transitions and characters relaxed, natural and simple.<\/p><p><strong>The power of sound<\/strong><\/p><p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/business\/en-GB\/blog\/kantar-report-how-brands-are-making-noise-and-driving-impact-with-sound-on-tiktok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">88%<\/a><\/u> of TikTok users believe sound to be essential to the experience. You can find accounts dedicated to sharing sounds that are about to take off using tags like #potentialaudio.<\/p><p>Keep in mind that a TikTok business account restricts your use of sounds to prevent copyright infringements. You will only have access to the commercial library of sounds, but as a lead advertiser at TikTok put it:<\/p><blockquote><p>\"From our experience in the internal TikTok ads team, you can still tell real stories through sound without using copyrighted material.\"<\/p><\/blockquote><p>In place of trending sounds, original voiceovers that are educational, funny or tell a compelling story are a good option.<\/p><p><br><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/8ek8lbqlqzczxsmufyixsr2qinjcvhkdc60hvsnuwbgnuynj.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"101090355\"><br><\/p><blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe use sounds that match our brand, like a rapper who\u2019s local to us. It has to make sense. A song that has natural stages so you can sync the content to the beats works well. Selecting comments from your previous videos to respond to is also a good format, as it creates interactivity.<\/p><p>Add subtitles if you\u2019re using a voiceover or text like 'That feeling when...' or 'POV:...' to provide context and set the scene.<\/p><p>For those who want to branch out and experiment with even more effects, there are plenty of mobile apps like CapCut, InShot, Wondershare Filmora or YouCut you can use before importing your video into TikTok.<\/p><p><strong>How to find what's trending<\/strong><\/p><p>Tapping into trends and adding your own unique twist to them is one surefire way to increase your reach. But how do you know what's trending?<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>For You page search bar<\/strong> - Find trending searches using the \u2018you may like\u2019 feature. Icons such as the \u2018flame\u2019 and \u2018arrow\u2019 show growing trends.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Use TikTok Creative Centre <\/strong>to identify trends. The \u2018trend Intelligence\u2019 feature can help isolate popular topics, sounds and content.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>But the best way to make sure your content is TikTok-friendly? Use TikTok.<\/p><p>Spend an hour scrolling through the app and you\u2019ll become familiar with how trends are utilised and the most popular ways of presenting information. You'll often see the audio and effects creators are using detailed around the description of the video - tap on the song, then 'Add to Favourites' to save it. <\/p><h3><strong>TikTok Tip 2: Personal stories, real people<\/strong><\/h3><p><br>The content that performs the best on TikTok is:<\/p><ul><li><p>personal<\/p><\/li><li><p>relatable<\/p><\/li><li><p>adds real value to the user\u2019s life<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>That can be because it\u2019s funny, educational, or topical and relevant to current events:<\/p><blockquote><p><em>\u201cOne of our most recent TikToks that blew up was about Wireless festival. One of our friends suggested we throw some Deguisement onto the stage, we made a TikTok about it saying we were giving out free tees, and it got 20K views in 2 hours because people were enthusiastic in the comments, tagging their mates.\u201d - Kas<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p><br><br><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/y90mtwrc8zfzxalhqpczd8ndxvhp6ceaouq60m1dz9bsfzq2.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"101090362\"><br><br>TikTok thrives off authenticity since it removes most of the barriers between creators and consumers. Watching a TikTok should be like having a conversation with a friend. That\u2019s why videos of real customers showing an unboxing of their order or recounting the experience of how they found you can be powerful ways to drive traffic to your store.<\/p><p>Because TikTok brings people closer together, it\u2019s a great environment for building memorable connections that lead to sales:<\/p><blockquote><p><em>\u201cBe nice no matter what, even to people that are saying you\u2019re rubbish. <\/em><strong><em>They\u2019re buying the brand, but they\u2019re buying you at the same time. <\/em><\/strong><em>If we start responding to hate in a negative way, that\u2019s going to reflect on the brand. \u201c - Kas<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>If customers get in contact with a question, Kas and Seb follow up later to check they're happy with their order and ask them to send a picture wearing the product. It's how they build relationships with customers across the internet (and build up a bank of User Generated Content they can use as social proof that people are loving their designs).<\/p><p><br><\/p><h3><strong>TikTok Tip 3: Consistency is king<\/strong><\/h3><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/yto1bgopympxoxvgdpu0zzh22jh08khoarmimukbbya0h4ol.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"101090367\"><br><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/hvjgrknnhprva28ncqbsqp1lopunj1qaauaghdsimpkxjifw.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"101090384\"><br>The Deguisement store was created in October and, though Kas and Seb were getting sales from friends and family, it took until April the following year for them to start selling to a wider audience.<\/p><p>What changed?<\/p><blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen we started, we\u2019d make a TikTok once a month, we weren\u2019t that focused. Now we wake up, we\u2019re thinking \u2018what are we going to do for the brand today?\u2019. Seeing success makes you more motivated and the motivation leads to more success, so it\u2019s an upwards spiral. That success only came when we started to be more consistent. \u201c - Seb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p><br><br><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/pdtvysfe76d7mt4qbdpgqszsckid7ehwzzktlo053ufyjwy1.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"101090388\"><br><br>More (and higher quality) content on the Deguisement account meant a higher chance of going viral. But they could only figure out what <em>does <\/em>work by posting things that <em>didn\u2019t work<\/em>. If you really want to go viral on TikTok, fail, fail and fail again until you find what works. It's the fastest way to success.<\/p><blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe were sharing outfit inspiration videos and we kept going with it until one of them got to about 100K. We got 12 sales in one evening and we celebrated so much. Then we hit 700k views on another video. We kept going and it grew into where we are now. \u201c - Seb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>Kas added:<\/p><blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf you\u2019re consistent, you\u2019ll get there. You could make 20 videos that don\u2019t perform but the 21st makes your brand. Keep going. \u201c - Kas<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p><br>To help you stay consistent and trial lots of different types of content, use a scheduling app like<a href=\"https:\/\/later.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><u><a href=\"https:\/\/later.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Later<\/a><\/u> and create your content in bulk to make this easier. Visit TikTok regularly to reply to comments or find new trends, then review the performance of all the different types of content you\u2019ve produced to help you decide where to focus your energy next.<\/p><h3><br><strong>Bonus - technical tips:<\/strong><\/h3><p>It\u2019s important to be aware of best practices that help you maximise your reach.<\/p><ul><li><p>When it comes to filming, record in 720p resolution or higher to see<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/business\/en-GB\/blog\/data-driven-tips-make-organic-content-stand-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/business\/en-GB\/blog\/data-driven-tips-make-organic-content-stand-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5.4% more impressions<\/a><\/u>.<\/p><\/li><li><p>For videos under 30 seconds, aim to include 3 to 10 cuts.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><p>It's not always about short videos. Try out lots of different lengths - whilst some top trending videos are only 5 seconds long, other brands will see better performance with several minutes of voiceover. It depends on the audience you\u2019re trying to reach and the type of content you\u2019re producing.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/4ck8v0xw6m9fsfak6afaivjvhtqipvfhohb1ypsqcbadzyyf.png.jpg?w=1140&amp;h=auto\" alt=\"\" title=\"101090391\"><br>-- <em>Educational videos like these are longer, with clear captions and entertaining hosts. Longer videos can be great for accounts with a cause or campaign to unpack.<\/em><\/p><p>Keep in mind that <strong>watch time<\/strong> is a key factor in how the TikTok algorithm works. TikTok will show your videos to more people if the average watch time is over 100% (meaning that everyone is watching the video until the end, then playing it again).<\/p><p><strong>Hooks to try to increase watch time:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><p><em>X things I wish I knew before...<\/em><\/p><\/li><li><p><em>The biggest mistake people make when...<\/em><\/p><\/li><li><p><em>You won't believe...<\/em><\/p><\/li><li><p><em>How I got ... in 24 hours<\/em><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Alongside watch time, you can see how many likes your videos are getting from followers vs non-followers in your TikTok analytics. This is a metric Kas and Seb use to predict how well a video is likely to perform overall.
