To help you get started, this blog will guide you through how to take digital illustrations, slogans and photos and turn them into professional graphic art prints.

First things first...

Before we get to the fun stuff, you'll need to set up a template to design your art prints within. Dimensions for each art print size and aspect are listed alongside the print in the Products builder. Once you've got your dimensions, set your template to the following specs:

Colour Mode: RGB

Resolution (DPI): 200-300

Border: 0.8-1 inch (2.5cm)

We'd recommend always adding a border area of roughly an inch to every art print so that your customers can pop them into frames.

Once you've set up your template with a border, you'll need to make sure all the main elements of your artwork is within the working area as shown below:

Now's the fun part. Designing your prints. Whether you're an artist with illustrations you want to turn into wall art, or a photographer with some stunning shots that would look perfect on a postcard, here are some easy ways to transform your artwork into eye-catching art prints.

1. Add textures and backgrounds to illustrations

We've shared some examples below of how to take existing graphic illustrations that you may have created for clothing products like t-shirts or tote bags, and make them pop on paper.

In this example, we've added a cool texture pattern behind this illustration. It fills out the space that would otherwise be blank on your print, and adds an edgy aesthetic.

Another way to bring your illustrations to life is with ink or paint splashes. These are a super simple way to turn your designs into dynamic art prints.

If you're looking for a vintage vibe, adding a halftone backdrop like we've done for this penguin print is a quick way to create a funky pop art effect.

2. Style-up simple slogans

You can transform simple slogan designs into stylish statement art prints in minutes. Take a look at some examples below.

To create a dynamic typography print, interweave an image with text by layering the base image over parts of the lettering.

A super quick way to add an image to your slogan and make an eye-catching print is to pop a vibrant image as the base layer and create a shape with your text. Then, knock-out the letters so that the image below shines through.

If you're wanting to keep things simple, just add a splash of colour to the background. In the examples above, we used a soft gradient fade for the Stop Ocean Plastic art print, and a two colour contrast for the Frankie Says Recycle design.

The tips in this blog can be mixed and matched across your prints - for example, we've taken the ink splashes that we used on illustrative designs and applied them to a slogan design.

To create a more detailed slogan print, try overlaying a slightly opaque graphic over your text. It's really easy to do, and effortlessly cool.

If you're going for this style, we'd recommend sticking to single colours for both slogan and graphic, and make sure that your slogan text is bold and easy to read so that the words don't get lost behind the graphic.

3. Take photographs to the next level with layouts and shapes

Amazing photography can work really well as a simple, straight-up print. Or, if you're looking to get a bit more creative and offer your customers more variety, we've shared a couple of ideas below to help you discover how you can turn your own photos into next level art.

First up is this classic art gallery style, created by just adding a clean white border around your photography.

Using a shape to frame your photographs can give them a smart, professional finish. Just remember to make sure the whole of your shape is within the border lines of your template so it doesn't get lost if a customer puts the print in a frame.

If you want to take using shapes to the next level, try removing parts of the frame so that it looks like the subject is breaking through, as we've done in the above examples.

One way to make your photographs more dynamic is to knock out your images on shapes or patterns. With this style, the less is more approach works well. Clean lines and large, simple shapes create eye-catching prints that still show off the original photograph.

Last but not least, playing around with layouts is a great way to turn a simple image into a cool abstract style. In this first example, we've taken the photograph and repeated the layers, slightly enlarging each time. In the second, we've chopped up the photos into sections and switched them up to create a whole new unique print.

Whether you're starting with illustrations, statement slogans or photos, it's easy to turn your existing artwork into amazing graphic art prints. When your design is ready to go, just head to yourProducts to upload your design, add to your store and start selling straight away.

T-shirts are timeless, and with their simple shape there’s no limit to what you can do with print, colour and your message So how do professional designers create t-shirt designs that get thousands of sales?
We're loving the return of campaign tees and with so many issues in the world today, there's never been a better time to use the power of fashion to change the way we want the world to be.
Wintercroft create awesome geometric animals from waste materials like the cardboard you have in your cupboard.
