To get that, it's actually quite easy AND if you use strategies like SEO, it's also free.

While there's loads of different ways to drive traffic to your site, in this blog we explain one free nifty little tool that can help you focus your marketing efforts - Google Trends.

Google Trends is a free website that analyses the popularity of search queries across the world. It uses graphs to show how the search query's popularity has changed over time, shows where these searches take place on a world map and allows you to compare trends against one another.

You can set various filters to narrow down the results to the behaviour of your target audience, including: the location, the time frame, the category (e.g. shopping, health) and type of search (Google Image search, Google News search, Google Shopping search and YouTube search). By default, Google Trends sets to America so make sure it's set to your country before you start.

What happens in the world impacts the search trends on Google. Google Trends helps you visualise the internet - if you can see what's going on online, you can position your business to take advantage of that. Think of Google Trends like a map - it shows you where all the running water is so you can jump in and make the most of it.

Remember that trends are real people, searching on Google. If you make content that answers their questions, it's more likely to be found and give you traffic. If you get traffic, it leads to sales.

An example of how world events effect search term trends is the shift towards online shopping influenced by COVID-19. Due to the number of people working from home, in lock down and the closing of many local shops, searches for online shopping have skyrocketed (blue) while searches for shops near me (red) has steadily declined.

It's not just shops - it's also people with disposable income changing their purchasing patterns and what they buy on the internet (like beer).

Right now, terms like "online shopping" and "home delivery" and "buy beer online" are all unicorn keywords as their search popularity is really high.

Remember that Google Trends shows what people are asking - use this information to build relevant content. Relevant, helpful content gets traffic, and traffic leads to sales. In this example, online stores could make sure that relevant phrases like "home delivery" "online store" and "shop online" feature across their site, particularly on the homepage, landing pages and especially product descriptions.

Probably the best way to use trends is writing blog posts on your store. Blog posts quickly link current trends to your store without needing to change loads of content on your store itself. Once you've figured out what the trend is, use Answer the Public to find out what questions people are specifically asking about the subject. Make the question your blog title and answer it in your post.

As well as using Google Trends to drive traffic to your site directly from searches, you can also use the data to improve the language in your marketing content. Sprinkle the same phrases into social media captions, video content and calls to action. Although your audience isn't directly on Google, when it comes to large-scale popular searches like this, it's likely that their needs are the same as the people searching.

So now you know what people are searching, you can write stuff using their words. Set your entire store up to pull in traffic by using them across your homepage, product titles, product descriptions and your about section.

Lets use an example: say you're an LGBTQ+ brand that makes celebratory clothing. SEO optimise your store by testing different language and using the most popular phrases throughout your writing.

Above you can see that "lgbt t-shirt" has been searched far more frequently than "gay pride t-shirt" over the last 5 years. This means that your customer is more likely to use the term "lgbt t-shirt" when they're searching for your products. Therefore, rather than calling this tee 'Warrior Tee', with our Google Trends knowledge we'd call it 'LGBT Warrior T-Shirt' and include the word LGBT t-shirt in the product description to help your customers find it more easily.

Use your customers words to help them find your products, which leads to traffic which leads to sales. It's easy.

A final way to make the best of search trends is to put money behind them in the form of advertising. First up, Pay-per-click adverts are where brands bid on specific keywords used in Google searches so that their website appears first.

Here's an example of a Rapanui ad that makes it appear above competitors in search results.

When bidding on search terms, it's important to put the research in first. Seeing as you're paying per click, you want to bid on the words that are most likely to result in a sale. Going for big broad terms that have huge audiences (like t-shirt or jumper) will cost a lot as the search term has a huge amount of traffic, meaning you're bidding against many, many other brands for the spot, plus the customer's intention is less clear meaning they might not be looking for your kind of product (making it a very hard, unlikely sale).

To strike a balance between budget and performance, pick very precise words that exactly describe your product (like kingfisher t-shirt). These words are likely to perform better on a lower budget because the audiences for those words are smaller, but the chance that the people in that audience will be interested in your products is higher (making your efforts more likely to result in a sale).

Want to increase the number of visitors to your store?
