Great question. While you can talk about traceability and Teemill any time, Fashion Revolution Week (around April every year) is a great time to spread the word about how your brand's clothing is made.

In this blog we'll answer that question as well as some other important ones that aren't often talked about. We'll also share some of our favourite staff stories so you can talk traceability with your customers confidently. Feel free to use these staff stories on your social media and download behind the scenes images from Drive for your marketing.

To see a list of all Teemill's certifications and accreditations check out our traceability page.

Who, what, where?

Out there in business-as-usual, a handful of massive brands take resources from our environment for the purpose of creating products that bring big profits at the expense of people and planet. But clothes shouldn't cost the Earth.

Who made your clothes?

We make it our business to personally live and work in every part of the supply chain. For us traceability is about working directly alongside our colleagues and constantly improving.

Your whole supply chain is digitised, which leads to efficiencies and savings. These are reinvested into our facilities, working conditions and teams so the environment in our workplaces is clean, light, modern and positive. That's true for everyone from organic cotton farmers like Natubi (top left) and quality managers like Shakti (top right) in India, to packers like Anabelle (bottom left) in our factory in the UK, through to people like Omar(bottom right) who remake old products into new.

What are your clothes made from?

Your products are made from organic cotton using renewable energy and eco-friendly materials like recycled or calendarised paper. Even your packaging is made from plants, not plastic. Organic cotton farming methods are better for producers and the ecosystem around the farms. Instead of more toxic pesticides and fertilisers, co-planting and insect traps are used along with the special ingredient - cow poo. It encourages biodiversity and leads to the extra soft feel of your products.

Where do they go when they're worn out?

Each product is designed to be sent back to us and the material reprocessed, respun and made into new products. This is what we call the Remill process and stores can add remilled products to their stores and keep the cycle going.

Approximately 7.23kgof CO2 and 4478 litres of water are saved per tee that has been remilled. Your customers can find instructions on how to send their products back on the washcare label of every item.

We can also recover clothing from other brands, as long as it's 100% cotton and it not denim or underwear. Find more details about this at teemill.com/threadnotdead.

When stores have their Remill plugin enabled, they can offer up to £5 off the customer's next order for every item they send back to be remade.

Find out more about the circular economy in our TED talk and on our Journey page.

What can you do about it?

Whilst it's important to share your sustainability credentials with customers all year round, Fashion Revolution Week is a great time to emphasise your brand's values. And to make our products circular, we need expertise at a raw materials level. Enter Natubi, organic cotton farmer with over 55 years experience. For as long as he can remember his family have been cotton farmers - he specialises in growing organic cotton. Although many people say farming organic cotton is worse for farmers as you get a lower yield, at a systemic level the story is different. Organic cotton sells for a far higher price. That means less work, for more money - positive for rural farmers in India. Organic farming also means his soil is high enough quality to grow edible crops, so during the off season he grows other things like onions, too.

Natubi loves the outdoor lifestyle of being a farmer - he's always smiling, but when we worked on his farm for a bit, we got to show him some of the products his cotton farm had made in collaboration with Teemill gave him an extra big grin.

Inside the factory, these two chaps are in charge of quality controlling the organic cotton used in our products. Once it's spun up, the cotton is shot across a big light bed to check for irregularity issues - if there's anything wrong, they slap a defect sticker on it.

Their long term game is to sneakily stick defect stickers on one another when they're not looking - when we came to visit everyone was falling about laughing as they'd managed the ultimate, to stick one on someone's head.

Once the cotton becomes fabric it falls into the hands of Rajesh. Rajesh is another cheery character in our team - a speedy tailor, he's pictured here sewing sleeves onto white organic cotton tees. These two women (who wished not to be named) were promoted due to their exceptional work as tailors. Now they share the responsibility of managing the staff and overseeing quality control, meaning they spend their days coaching and training people, solving problems and making sure the products are always great.

Confident, friendly and focused, these two explained their loved ones are really proud of the progress of their careers as they're both the first generation of women in their families to have leadership roles.

We don't believe in the concept of waste. It's just another material flow. So when we realised there were off-cuts from our cotton factory that weren't being used we looked into how we could utilise them. In this factory we take floor cuttings, mix them with water and sunlight, and create paper, stickers and our notebooks.

To take it a step further, we wanted to know whether it was possible to design a product that was circular, meaning it was made from old, worn out products so our entire brand had no waste (spoiler alert, we did it). To make it happen we teamed up with a really old family business that recycles carpets and old curtains into insulation, and worked with them to turn old products our customers had returned into fresh new fabric.

The above photograph captures the moment that Mart (one of Teemill's founders) and Pablo (from the family business) first saw the fabric being produced.
